I remember hearing this story when it originally aired. I listen to NPR often. I gather that researchers claim that beficial anti-oxidants are created when a martini is shaken. I think some but not as many are created stirring. I have tried stirring and even practiced enough to make a pretty decent martini that way. Still though I prefer a gentle shake in a large shaker full of ice. I don't do any of that flair stuff like throwing the shaker up in the air and catching it. I do more like how you would burp a young baby that just had a bottle. One day I will watch the Thin Man movie where he instructs the bartender on shaking. I have a couple of those glass martini pitchers with the glass stir sticks. The sound the stirring makes kind of clicks when the stick taps the inside of the pitcher. It sounds like it might break. A metal mixing cup and a bar spoon sounds like scraping if you are not careful srirring. Maybe the answer is use a wooden spoon or chop stick to stir? I keep the martini pitchers more as part of my bar ware collection. I have several stainless shakers that are my working tools. Maybe one day I will find a sterling one.
