Posts: 89 (12/26/08 16:49:49) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I log on to Amazon to find a book, find it, buy it, and just before logging off something catches my eye: Amazon hawking a product they know I'll have an interest in, since I've bought it from them beofre: bittters. So now Fee Brothers has a new mint bitters. It's the holidays and I feel generous with myself so I click it to purchase. The next page says, "Hey, how about buying these other products as well?" And it displays 2 other Fee Bros. products: Lemon Bitters and Grapefruit Bitters. Oh what the hell, I buy all three. Now I have three spanking new bottles of bitters and haven't the slightest idea what to do with them. Oh, I know generally what to do with them: I'll put 2 or three drops of each in my next martini. But for all my impulsiveness you'd think I'd get more bang for my buck. Has anybody tried these yet? -- Gerry

Fee's also has an old fashioned bitters I would like to try. I still have a good supply of Stirring's orange bitters that I add a few drops of to a martini. So far Reagan's #6 is my favorite so eventually I will have to break down and order some. It is hard to find in stores.

Check out their full line of bitters: http://www.feebrothers.com/Product.asp?Category=5 The old-fashioned appeals, but also their "Whiskey Barrel Aged" bitters. The Rhubarb bitters? Heck, if grapefruit, lemon, orange and who knows what other Bitters are added to a martini, is there no end to what y'all are willing to use to transform the vermouth and gin combination? How about kiwi, guava, persimmon, kumquat and lord knows what else an enterprising manufacturer might come up with in an attempt to take advantage of the recent Martini Renaissance. Spend your discretionary money as you see fit, but don't come a-crying when your 401K turns into a 201K. Bitters be damned, I'm trying to figure out to afford a 1.75L bottle of Beefeaters on my Social Security check. I'm sorry if I persist in sticking to the age old combination of gin and vermouth, without the need to change that tried and true formula. I can understand the need for some people to transform a martini into an au currant, trendy drink by pouring in unconventional additives. However, I'm of the opinion that doing so only transmogrifies a true martini into something that will shortly cause the adulterer to morph into a Cosmo, Green Apple, Lemon Drop drinker. I warn you, it's an insidious path away from what we, the last bastion of real martini aficionados, have come to appreciate as the heavenly proscribed martini. the old codger (who would rather give up his cholesterol medication than pass on a bottle of Beefeaters)

Posts: 58 (12/30/08 09:45:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I'll toe the line with the Codger, fighting the tide of perdition's pseudo-tinis (while thinking back on earlier recommendations on this board regarding additions of other bitters or Scotch! to an otherwise law-abiding martini). I do admit to recent rounds of Makers Mark Manhattans with a splash of orange bitters. Damn good fuel against the winter winds. Codger, as to the funding of life's true needs, to wit, a 1.75 L of Beefeaters, I noted previously that Pernod Ricard is running a rebate for such purchases (at least in the Washington, DC and Northern Virginia area): $8.00 rebate for purchase of 1.75 L (which costs @ $24 and change here, leaving the final cost @ $16). Enter as many times as you wish; coupons were still available in my local store when I was there this past weekend. I was not able to find the rebate coupons online at Beefeater's site, but did see a note about their new "super premium" Beefeater 24.
