I don't want to tread on Codger's thread regarding the Algonquin, but I did want to bring to the group's attention a great article from the
Washington Post (Food section, Feb. 4, 2009) on the "resurgence" of the martini. Good information on new vermouths, gins (including a revived Old
Tom Gin):

Among other things I was interested to learn that Noily Prat had two different formulas. So now, if I get a bottle, it may be the European new to us recipe?
Half and half is probably too much for me. I do like enough vermouth that I can tell it's there. I have seen a few newer brands of gin; New Amsterdam,
and a new French gin. They were both 80 proof, not too interesting.
